Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust - ‘Creating Life Chances for Young People’

About Dame Kelly Holmes

Dame Kelly Holmes is the founder of The Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust. She is, however, best known for her international athletics career where she won World, Commonwealth and European medals, not to mention the double Olympic gold win at The Games in Athens 2004. Dame Kelly also holds the British records for the 600m, 800m, 1000m and 1500m.

Dame Kelly started off training for athletics in 1982, at the age of 12, inspired by Lord Sebastian Coe. However, at the age of 18 she joined the British Army, only competing at the organisation’s athletics events. It wasn’t until 1992 whilst watching the Olympics on television that she decided to return to professional athletics. Today, having achieved success beyond her dreams, Dame Kelly no longer competes professionally, yet she remains committed in her approach to both life and work. Dame Kelly is extremely passionate about helping others fulfil their potential and it is for this reason that she founded the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.

Partnership with Morgan Hunt

Morgan Hunt and The Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust entered an ongoing relationship in April 2010. The charity inspires young people to find and fulfill their potential in sport or in life through innovative projects and programmes delivered by their team of inspirational sports performers. Morgan Hunt are sponsoring the charity’s ‘Get On Track’ programme which provides stepping stones for vulnerable young people to volunteering, work placements and employment opportunities. We believe the industry has a responsibility to help, and will use our relationship with employers to partner the Trust to make a dramatic difference to this group of young people’s lives and careers.

"Currently, close to one million young people nationwide are not in education, employment or training. I strongly believe that young people need help....someone to believe in them and help them find their own talents. That's where I want my charity, the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust to make a difference, through the 'Get on Track Programme'. I believe this project will help the young people across the UK make real changes in their lives, providing practical support towards securing work placements and employment." Dame Kelly Holmes, August 2010.

Rickeisha Gordon, who participated on the Get On Track programme, had this to say “This past week has been brilliant, I have learnt so much and have gained so many skills. I have had great fun and I would recommend it to all. Now I have made great new friends and I feel I can go into the world and achieve what I want thanks to the Get On Track project.”
