There has been a continuing rise in the count of claimants seeking Jobseeker's Allowance benefit which has increased for the eleventh month in succession. For Housing Associations trying to get their long-term unemployed tenants back to work, it can sometimes prove an uphill struggle.
Family Housing Association has long recognised that there is a large proportion of unemployed tenants who are genuinely enthusiastic about finding work, but may either be short of the skills necessary to go about their job search or simply lack the confidence when meeting potential employers.
By partnering with Morgan Hunt specialist public sector recruiter and running a series of joint training and support courses, Family Housing has helped a number of tenants to find suitable employment. The complimentary courses offer advice on working in the public sector, CV preparation, job search techniques, interview training and improving communications skills.
The scheme is not only proving beneficial to course attendees but Family Housing is hoping their performance targets will continue to improve to help secure future government funding.
Olatunde Kehinde is one of the course attendees and comments, “I had been out of work for around a year and the course provided a catalyst for me to find the right job. The course gave me ideas on different employment options to explore that I had not previously considered. Participating on this course improved my confidence by giving practical tips and I was able to find work with London Borough of Ealing through Morgan Hunt soon after. This is a valuable service for tenants who may find themselves out of work for a period of time but are keen to develop and improve themselves to get back to work.”
