Head of Remuneration and Policy
The General Council of the Bar (known as the Bar Council) was founded in 1894 to represent the interests of barristers. As the governing body for the Bar its role is to promote and improve the services and functions of the Bar, and to represent the interests of the Bar on all matters relating to the profession, whether trade union, disciplinary, public interest or in any way affecting the administration of justice. The Bar Council has a wide range of representative functions. It works extensively with government and other bodies on matters affecting the administration of justice and promotes the interests of the Bar in the UK and internationally. It also provides a number of services for the Bar.

This is an excellent opportunity for an intellectually strong individual to work for a respected professional body and to lead the Remuneration and Policy team.
The Head of Remuneration and Policy is a high profile role that will expose you to a wide variety of stakeholders, from government departments to leaders within the legal profession. You will manage a small team supporting the Bar on fees and remuneration issues and play a key role in the long term policy development for the Bar.
Reporting to the Director of Representation and Policy your key responsibilities will be:

Considering developments within the legal services market and initiatives from public sector stakeholders, notably Ministry of Justice, Legal Services Commission and HM Revenue and Customs.

Managing the implementation of the Bar Council’s policy development, including initiatives concerning fees and terms of work.

Coordinating research that informs public policy development

Organistation of the Annual Remuneration Conference, from securing sponsorship to devising the programme and providing briefings

Acting as Secretary to the Remuneration Committee and ensuring that there is secretarial support for other committees and working groups that fall within your remit.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a long established yet forward thinking organisation. You will know about the legal system and the Bar’s position within it. A legal qualification (whether a degree in Law or professional qualification or both) would be a distinct advantage. An understanding of funding within the legal system would also be desirable. You will have extensive experience of policy drafting and supporting committees. You will be driven, a strong communicator and be proactive in moving projects forward.
