The Fashion and Textile Museum, Newham College, is looking for Communications, Marketing and Press Officer.

The Fashion and Textile Museum, London was founded in 2003, by icon of British design, Dame Zandra Rhodes. Today, the Museum is operated by Newham College, London – one of Europe’s largest further education colleges.

This post communicates the work of the Fashion and Textile Museum to the public and stakeholders by presenting and publicising the Museum's programme of exhibitions and learning, the Museum collection, and supports the Museum's commercial and fundraising priorities alongside generating coverage and recognition.  

As part of a small team, this post plays an essential part in ensuring visitor and commercial targets are met by engaging new and existing audiences and broadcasting the Museum’s audience offer.  

This post also provides crucial support for the Operations team in the day to day running of the Museum including Duty Manager responsibilities, customer service and estates.  

We are looking for an ambitious all-rounder with a keen interest in Museums and design, with an eagerness to learn and grow their skills. The successful candidate will be a confident voice in advocating the work of the Fashion and Museum and Newham College.

Job Purpose

This post communicates the work of the Fashion and Textile Museum to the public and stakeholders by presenting and publicising the Museum's programme of exhibitions and learning, the Museum collection, and supports the Museum's commercial and fundraising priorities alongside generating coverage and recognition.  

As part of a small team, this post plays an essential part in ensuring visitor and commercial targets are met by engaging new and existing audiences and broadcasting the Museum’s audience offer.  

This post also provides crucial support for the Operations team in the day to day running of the Museum including Duty Manager responsibilities, customer service and estates.  

Key duties and responsibilities of the post

 Duties and Responsibilities

The Museum is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday 11am-6pm during exhibitions. The Museum is also available for events, meetings, courses, and other activities. The post holder will work on site 10am-6.15pm, 5 days a week Tuesday to Saturday. The demands of the Museum diary require flexibility to ensure business needs are met, including working the occasional bank and public holiday, early morning, evening, Monday, or Sunday.  

Communications and Marketing 50% 

  • Create, design, source, plan and schedule content across the website, ticketing system, digital and social media channels.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to edit and schedule content in line with commercial, fundraising and organisational priorities alongside customer and visitor feedback. 
  • Update the Museum website and ticketing system.
  • Liaise with the College’s marketing team on technical aspects of the website.  
  • Produce, source, edit, coordinate, and publish museum website content.  
  • Develop and deliver a comprehensive social media and e-flyer plan.   
  • Create and publish engaging, audience-focused social media content and e-flyer content, including live video. 
  • Initiate the use of new social media and marketing channels not already used by the Museum such as TikTok and LinkedIn.  
  • Produce, source, edit, coordinate, and publish content for the weekly e-flyer content through Mailchimp.  
  • Manage and grow the Museum’s mailing list adhering to GDPR. 
  • Produce, source, edit, coordinate, and publish content for the Museum Blog.  
  • Analyse engagement across all digital channels and set regular targets for meaningful engagement and growth in followers.  
  • Monitor all digital channels and coverage (including reviews) for feedback and respond appropriately.  
  • Support colleagues to maintain the retail online shop.  
  • Create, source, plan and schedule marketing partnerships with other institutions and partners such as Art Fund, strengthening existing and forging new relationships and networks.  
  • Create audience focused branded marketing materials such as ‘What’s on guide’, print flyers, QR codes, visitor information posters and speeches.  
  • Contribute to decisions surrounding exhibition marketing graphic design ensuring all visitor and marketing information is correct.  
  • Work with colleagues to research, commission and/or license exhibition press and marketing images.  
  • Commission and oversee exhibition photography for marketing, press and archive.  
  • Working with the Front of House Coordinator monitor and appropriately respond to visitor feedback garnered through feedback forms.  
  • Working with the Front of House Coordinator write and ensure exhibitions and events listings are up to date.  
  • Support fundraising efforts through channels such as Crowd Funder and social media.   
  • Assist colleagues at Newham College to promote the Fashion & Tailoring courses.  

Press 30% 

  • Create, plan and schedule press activities adhering to brand guidelines, house style and continuity. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues to edit and schedule press content in line with commercial, fundraising, and organisational priorities.  
  • Write and format press releases for exhibitions and other museum activities.   
  • Handle all enquiries from journalists, including exclusives, scheduling interviews and press visits.  
  • Maintain and continually develop press database in line with GDPR.  
  • Work with the Operations Manager and other colleagues to organise and manage press events.  
  • Create reports on press coverage and benchmark.  
  • Monitor public opinion and media reviews and responding appropriately.  
  • Be aware of trends of public opinion within heritage and in wider cultural landscape.  
  • Produce press packs for press events.  

Operations 20% 

  • Cover customer facing areas of the Museum where required at the front ticketing desk, in the shop and gallery, providing excellent and friendly customer service.  
  • Assist with customer enquiries over the phone and by email.  
  • Work with the Operations Manager as a ‘presenter’ and ‘producer’ for online Team Live and in-house events and edit online events for ‘Events on Demand’.  
  • Assist colleagues in readying Museum spaces for workshops, events, and venue hire.  
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations for colleagues when required.  
  • Manage the Museums drobox account.  
  • Organise and manage the Museum’s digital photography.  
  • Undertake Duty Manager responsibilities when required which include taking morning meetings, adjusting the daily rota, supervising casual staff and volunteers, security checks and opening and unlocking the building.  
  • Undertake any other duties as required, consistent with the demands of the Museum and the level of the post.  

Person specification:

Experience of working in communications, marketing or press within Museums, the cultural sector, fashion, or design.  

 

Knowledge of fashion and textiles or other heritage/museum subjects.  

Skills 

Computer Skills:  

Adobe Creative Suite in particular developed skills in using Photoshop and InDesign, and Acrobat.  

Social Media Channels and scheduling tools.  

Microsoft Office

Excellent verbal communication and copy writing skills 

Intermediate skills in Adobe Creative Suite in particular Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, and an understanding of using Adobe Premier and Adobe Illustrator though training can be provided.

    This is an exciting opportunity to work in a team that deals with a range of issues from academic to non-academic matters, utilising your skills and expertise in managing complex cases and to further grow your skills in dealing with complex university processes.
      
    In order to be considered for this post, you will have worked within a similar post, ideally within a higher education setting or a regulatory environment. You will have experience of successfully managing casework, including customer service and complaints.   • Human Resources Manager

    Working with the Head of Human Resources, you’ll contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and high-quality HR service to managers and staff across the group, providing advice, coaching and guidance to managers, whilst supporting the delivery of service plans and assisting with the achievement of operational targets and objectives.

    Assisting the Head of HR (Operations), you’ll provide support with employee relations work: disciplinary, grievance, capability and sickness absence processes are delivered in a supportive and consistent manner, with specific regard to matters that relate to safeguarding and statutory and legal considerations. Undertaking job evaluations in support of pay and grading, ensuring adherence with the Group’s job evaluation arrangements, you’ll support the HR Advisors to ensure the delivery of monthly payroll items for your designated area, as well as the onboarding process for new starters, whilst reviewing the information that is entered into the Single Central Record.

    This role would suit someone who has significant experience in an operational HR role to include experience of leading a HR team, developing and implementing HR Policies and procedures. We’d like you to ideally have UK and relevant European legislation and associated case law experience. You’ll hold CIPD or will be working towards gaining your CIPD Level 7.

    With highly developed communication, interpersonal and prioritisation skills, you’ll have experience in the use of IT including managing and administering computerised HR and payroll systems at an advanced level.

    This post is predominantly based in Merton College but may involve travel between all South Thames Colleges Group sites. The post will dictate a combination of on-site attendance (a minimum of three days per week) and home working.
