Job description

Morgan Hunt are currently working with a Facilities Provider based in Colchester, in their search for an Electrical Estates Maintenance Operative.

The successful applicant will be required to:

  • Carry out all aspects of electrical work to maintain the health service premises across the estate.
  • Install, test, commission, maintain, service and repair electrical and electronic systems as well as associated mechanical equipment.
  • Maintain a safe environment for service users, staff and visitors with regards to building fabric and building services.

Job Type: Temporary, 12 weeks

Hours: 37.5 hours (plus on call)

Start Date: ASAP

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as an individual and act on own initiative as well as part of the trade team and participate in cross-trade working as and when required. Must be willing to carry out basic duties of mixed disciplines and attend training courses as necessary.
  • Must prioritise own work load on a day to day basis and ensuring tasks are carried out in an affective order, considering both urgency and location.
  • To use all workshop machinery to its fullest potential.
  • Must keep all Trust issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in good condition and wear when necessary.
  • Must be willing to work as a mobile operative and travel to all sites across the estate as and when required. Must also be willing to travel to different locations if/when the estate expands.
  • Must have the ability to work in hazardous areas and be able to remain calm when working in environments, such as mental healthcare premises, that can become hostile.
  • Must be willing and available to participate in the out of hour's response arrangement as required.
  • Must be willing and available to work overtime in emergency situations.
  • Must accept responsibility for own work and strive to complete all work to a high standard and within current regulations.
  • Responsible for finishing own work including filling, making good and painting.
  • Undertake planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, new installations and improvements across the Trust as directed by management. This must be carried out in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
  • Carry out fault finding on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment including electrical distribution, lighting, fire detection, building control & automation, standby generator plant, security access control and nurse call systems.
  • Undertake electrical testing/commissioning and monitor results to ensure compliance with the latest edition of the IET Wiring regulations BS7671. Requesting remedial works or emergency isolation as and when required and issue the appropriate completion certificates.
  • Undertake condition surveys and evaluate inspection reports.
  • Follow detailed engineering drawings and specifications as required.

Personal Specification

  • Recognised Trade Apprenticeship in electrical discipline
  • City & Guilds Technical Level 3 in Electrical Installation (or equivalent)
  • NVQ level 3 in Electrical Installation/Engineering (or equivalent)
  • BS7671 18th edition & amendments
  • National Certificate or Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (ONC/HNC) or equivalent level of experience and/or training
  • City & Guilds Testing & Inspection qualification (2391 or 2394-95)
  • City & Guilds Portable Appliance Testing 2377
  • Specialist experience and professional knowledge to degree level obtained through technical courses and experience
  • Knowledge of Electrical safety Code for LV systems
  • Working knowledge of HTM 06-02 - Low Voltage systems
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution, standby generators, fire alarm systems, and building management systems
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills.
  • Performance focused - to operate within agreed performance standards
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and customer skills.
  • Must be enthusiastic, reliable, motivated & have excellent organisation skills.
  • Must have a degree of initiative to prioritise and organise daily duties.
  • Ability to carry out duties under minimum supervision and as part of a team.
