- Job Purpose
The Head of School will work with the College Principal and the Deputy College Principal to develop and lead a coherent and locally responsive curriculum the area of responsibility including 16-19, Adult, HE and Apprenticeship provision.
- Principal Duties
- To lead and manage curriculum staff.
- To plan, develop and lead a coherent 16-19 curriculum with clear progression pathways and routes to employment.
- To ensure that all learners on study programmes receive their full entitlement to English and maths.
- To ensure that all learners on study programmes receive their full entitlement to meaningful work experience.
- To ensure that all learners on study programmes access the full range of planned enrichment activities.
- To ensure that all learners on study programmes meet the full funding requirements.
- To plan, develop and deliver a curriculum for adults, apprentices, and Higher Education.
- To plan and deliver effective and efficient deployment of staff.
- To liaise with employers, learners, and the community to develop and maintain an appropriate curriculum.
- To achieve excellence through continuous improvement through the provision of appropriate learning environments.
- To lead learning in the school to promote and achieve outstanding teaching and learning.
- To model high quality classroom practice in personal teaching time.
- To comply with all quality assurance procedures as required.
- To ensure the health, safety and welfare of students and staff in the school.
- To manage the performance of staff effectively, recognising high performance and addressing poor performance quickly and effectively.
- To ensure appropriate staff skills and knowledge are developed and maintained to enable staff to deliver high quality provision.
- To maintain accurate and timely information in relation to all relevant activity, including responsibility for data contained in the ILR and School Self Assessment Reports.
- To achieve targets agreed with the College Principal, including student recruitment, attendance, retention, achievement, progression, value added scores and high grades.
- To ensure effective communication across the department, including planned and structured formal meetings which are minute and actioned.
- To manage all physical and human resources effectively to ensure value for money.
- To work with other College managers to develop and enhance students' experience and grow new provision.
- To chair Stage 3 student disciplinary panel meetings.
- Management Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all designated areas of responsibility.
- Role model outstanding teaching, learning & assessment practice.
- Embed a positive staff workforce that is committed to the College's vision and values, whose culture is one of striving for excellence within their areas and responsibilities.
- Set clear expectations by embedding robust performance management processes, in line with college policies and processes throughout all staff employment.
- Identify and take appropriate action in relation to poor performance quickly and efficiently in line with college policies and procedures.
- Responsible for ensuring staff have 1-2-1 meetings, performance & development reviews and/or probation reviews regularly and in a timely manner.
- Lead and manage professional development for staff ensuring they maintain up to date knowledge on all relevant legislation, regulations, awarding body criteria etc.
- Identify areas / activities which present a risk to the health and safety of students and staff and take appropriate action to rectify.
- Work proactively with the Group Director, People & Organisational Development and Group Director, Quality, Teaching & Learning to develop and implement and complete relevant compulsory professional training and CPD as appropriate.
- Work proactively with the Group Director of MIS and staff team, in relation to student data, monitoring and all exams and assessments, particularly including, enrolment, withdrawal, exams, controlled assessments and invigilation requirements.
- Marketing
Work collaboratively with the Group Marketing & Communications Department to promote the College services and provision positively, our work within communities, our staff, and students' achievements via all appropriate media options.
- Budget Responsibilities
- Ensure full compliance with College Financial Policies and processes.
- Responsible for compliance with procurement of goods and services ensuring value for money and effective utilisation of items procured.
- General Responsibilities
- Create a safe working culture that enables staff to speak up, think innovatively, develop, and share and try out new ideas and processes, and work collaboratively to contribute to improvements across colleges.
- Maintain, the health, safety and welfare of staff and students through compliance with college policies, including effective risk management procedures.
- Embed equality, diversity, and inclusion throughout all aspect of your role, promote key information and challenge unacceptable behaviours and conduct in a timely manner.
- In line with GDPR legislation and regulations, take responsibility for the data that you manage and process.
- Implement with College policies and procedures, ensuring you communicate these with all relevant staff and monitor and track compliance.
- Work collaboratively with all academic and support services to support the needs of staff and our students.
- Actively chair and engage in a range of cross College meetings, as required.
To carry out any other duties as may be required by the College Senior Leadership Team, Executive Board or as may be required or as directed
