Job description

We have a current opportunity for a Bumblebee Room Leader on a permanent basis. The role will be based in South Ealing.

Responsible for: Line management responsibility of approximately 3 staff, volunteers and students as a Room Leader. If acting as the nursery manager the entire team of 13 staff.

Hours of Work: 45 hours per week, generally worked within office hours, Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work

Work Location: South Ealing YMCA, although may be required to work at any YMCA St Paul's Group location

Job Purpose

Day-to-day management of Bumblebees Room (2-3s) and the implementation of new initiatives, improvements, and policies. Supervising the day-to-day activities of the staff team and care and education of the children. Taking responsibility for relevant administration and staff management duties. Named person for Ofsted in the absence of the Early Years Manager and the Deputy Nursery Manager. There may be occasions when you will be the sole manager onsite.

Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum Developments and Delivery

  • Oversee the curriculum at Jumpers! Nursery, ensuring it is creative, stimulating and fun. That it facilitates the intellectual, emotional, physical, social and where appropriate, spiritual development of each child. Ensure all staff complete 'In the Moment Planning'
  • Ensuring that the preparation, care, cleanliness and maintenance of the room, kitchen and equipment are carried out according to the Policies & Procedures and risk assessments.
  • Where possible relating the Christian ethos of YMCA SPG to the curriculum of Jumpers! Nursery.
  • Establish and maintain a stimulating, age-appropriate and accessible programme of activities for the children in-line with the Early Years Foundation Stage 2021 Statutory Framework.
  • Lead a 'Positive Choices' atmosphere that encourages and praises children.
  • Keep records of the children's development.
  • Prepare development reports as required and liaise with their parents/carers and the Nursery Manager on issues of concern.
  • Be responsible for working on action plans towards the setting achieving an Outstanding rating from Ofsted
  • Ensure that the preparation, care, cleanliness and maintenance of the room, kitchen and equipment are carried out according to the Policies & Procedures and risk assessments.
  • Ensure that displays are regularly changed to stimulate development and curiosity, and reflect the children's work.

Child Care

This will include: ensuring the safety and well-being of each child by creating a loving and caring atmosphere, recognising each child as an individual and support them to realise their potential. Keeping up-to-date with current childcare legislation and general childcare developments, ensuring that the nursery adheres to Ofsted and Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018, and the London Child Protection Procedures 2022 at all times.

This will involve ensuring:

  • Ensuring an inclusive environment in relation to equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Care and supervision of the children with regard to their physical, emotional and intellectual needs.
  • Being responsible for the safety and well-being of each child whilst on YMCA SPG premises.
  • Keeping daily attendance registers/signing in/out sheets.
  • Ensure all staff are completing observations using the online learning journal tool
  • Ensuring each child is given praise and encouragement, opportunities to succeed in environments where positive behaviour is promoted.
  • Ensure that only designated staff administers medication to children in accordance with YMCA SPG policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all children are allocated to a specific key person prior to their initial settling-in date.
  • Children are settled into their new environment and supported to form relationships with their peer group and staff.

Finance and Budgetary Management

  • Create accounts for new customers on the settings admin tool, Nursery in a Box
  • Posting parents payments onto their accounts and monitoring debts on accounts in the absence of the Early Years Manager/Deputy Manager. Contacting parents in writing and discussing the payment of arrears on accounts and setting up a repayment plan if required.
  • Liaising with finance to ensure payments for the setting are highlighted to enable allocation to the nursery account.
  • Claiming funding via the Ealing portal in the absence of the Early Years Manager/Deputy Nursery Manager. Allocating funding to eligible families, and ensuring this is in line with the allocation from the Local Authority.
  • Prepare and send invoices to parents on 15th of each month using Nursery in a Box and preparing Direct Debit sheets for finance 5 working days before the 1st of each month.
  • Monitoring stock, material and equipment levels in the setting and inform the Early Years Manager in advance of orders to maintain adequate facilities in the nursery. This will also include assisting in the management of room vacancies and ensure that these voids are filled as soon as possible. Undertake active marketing in situations where numbers are low.
