Head of Finance

Location: City of London

Contract: Permanent; Full-time.

Salary: £55,000-£60,000 per annum

They aim to ensure that appropriate and effective support and treatment is available for those who are harmed or at risk of harm by problem gambling.

About the role

This is a key role within finance reporting into the Director of Finance, responsible for providing timely and high quality accounting information to executive and senior management within the charity.

In this role you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations of the charity, supporting and developing the finance team, and providing financial leadership promoting sound financial management of the organisation.

This position will play an active role in the wider Leadership Team of the charity, and will be a source of expertise to the wider charity.


Reporting into the Director of Finance and IT, you will be responsible for:

  • Oversee end-to-end accounting operations
  • Be responsible for the integrity and accuracy of our books and records
  • Be responsible for month-end and year-end closing procedures
  • Contribute to the production of our annual report and accounts
  • Oversee and review the monthly payroll and pension process
  • Manage the external and internal audit processes
  • Be responsible for all VAT, Gift Aid, payroll taxes and other government reporting
  • Take an active lead in maintaining and improving our reporting systems and controls
  • Ensure compliance with charity and general accounting regulations
  • Take a lead in the preparation of an annual budget and project costing
  • Work as part of a finance team to produce monthly management accounts
  • Review operational performance against budget and investigate significant variances
  • Take a lead in financial planning

Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA and/or accounting degree (Qualified by experience candidates with demonstrable track-record will be considered)
  • Working across different projects, teams and levels within an organisation
  • Managing a finance team
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent people and management skills
  • Excellent working knowledge of Excel pivot tables and advanced formulas
  • Excellent written and verbal communication style
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Charities SORP

To be considered for the role it is important that all candidates have real demonstrable experience of management of a finance function, and ideally experience within the charity sector.
