Job description

POST: Essential Skills Coach

LOCATION: East London

HOURS: Full Time, Term Time Only, 36 hours per week


To work in a newly established team to plan and deliver engaging, interactive, practical sessions to groups of students to build their essential skills in communication, creative problem solving, self-management and collaboration.


  1. Deliver essential skills sessions to groups of students covering a range of personal and employability-based skills areas.
  2. Work closely with the other Essential Skills coaches and the Essential Skills Co-ordinator to develop the programme and develop approaches to delivery.
  3. Plan an innovative approach to the creation of individual and group-led activities to enable students with a wide range of skills and abilities to develop their essential skills.
  4. Work closely with curriculum teams to develop contextualised materials for delivery.
  5. Plan, track and monitor the development of skills builder portfolios and support students as they work towards their Skills Builder award.
  6. Ensure Skills Builder requirements are being met, complying with internal and external quality processes as required.
  7. Take part in quality assurance sessions, ensuring portfolio work has been standardised effectively.
  8. Help plan and deliver college wide skills days.
  9. Ensure that the needs of all students including those who are vulnerable or who require a high level of support, such as learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities are met.


  1. To work flexibly according to the demands of the service and to perform such other duties, within the competence of the post-holder, which may be reasonably required, from time to time, including work outside of normal hours.
  2. To represent the college at meetings as directed.
  3. To work with colleagues in support of college policies and initiatives.
  4. To participate in the college appraisal process.
  5. To participate in inspections and self-assessment.

  • Experience within the Education and Training sector
  • Available to interview immediately
  • Right to Work & Enhanced Adult/Child DBS dated within the last 3 months or on the update service
