Research Finance Officer

Temporary (3 month's)

London (WC1E) / Hybrid

£15.66 minimum per hour Holiday pay

Full Time - 36.5 hours per week

Morgan Hunt are working with a University who are currently recruiting for a Research Finance Officer to join their team on a full time, temporary basis. The Contract is for a minimum of three month's.


Some of your duties and responsibilities as a Research Finance Officer will include:

  • Provide advice and guidance to staff applying for research grants in relation to the internal grant application process.
  • Provide support during the grant application process; creating Worktribe projects, completing costings to ensure optimal research income for the Institute within the terms and conditions of the funding body; facilitating the internal application approval process.
  • Liaise with grant holders and Pre-award Research Services in order to set-up new awards, obtaining and providing all necessary documentation required.
  • Create and facilitate new research contract requests
  • Provide financial summaries for grant holders and their delegates in accordance with the needs of these individuals
  • Assist with the process of monitoring expenditure against research awards to ensure appropriate spend against the award in a timely manner and in compliance with funders' terms and conditions.
  • Communicate grant related matters to grant holders and provide support for resolving grant related queries.
  • Respond proactively to grant related queries from staff, seeking timely resolutions to issues (e.g. Costing research funded staff salaries using the Worktribe standalone facility).
  • Liaise with grant holders and Post-Award Research Services to arrange grant extensions and supplements
  • Arrange interdepartmental journals/transfers (IDJs/IDTs) to move costs from one account to another, as required, ensuring a record of the expenditure items moved is kept for audit.
  • Liaise with Accounts Payable, research project staff, and product suppliers to clear commitments on grants.
  • Liaise with funders and the NHS on behalf of the Institute and grant holders
  • Monitor expenditure on UKRI (research council) awards to ensure only allowable costs are incurred, arranging IDJs to transfer costs that are not allowable to alternative accounts.
  • Assist the Research Finance Manager with keeping accurate records of grants applied for, awarded and grant expenditure, to enable the provision of accurate management information.
  • Maintain and apply up-to-date knowledge of Financial Regulations.
  • Approve purchase orders and respond to other routine finance queries for other members of the Finance Team when leave or other absences require cover
  • Any other duties that are required of you throughout your assignment


  • Commitment towards your personal professional development
  • Working knowledge of costing research applications to funding bodies in the Higher Education Sector or the National Health Service
  • Provide administrative support of research grants in the Higher Education Sector or the National Health Service
  • Used both financial and research electronic management systems
  • Previously worked within a large and complex organisation
  • Provide financial information in a manner accessible to non-finance professionals
  • Able to communicate both written and verbally to a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Excellent IT skills, including Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Strong numeracy, analysis and problem solving skills
  • Able to explain financial concepts and funding terms and conditions to non-finance professionals
  • Provide financial information in a manner accessible to non-finance professionals
  • Learn new database and electronic applications
  • Meet strict deadlines
