Senior Finance Assistant


Chingford (E17)

£16.65 Per hour holiday pay

Full Time - 36 hours per week

Morgan Hunt are working with a London-based College who are currently recruiting for a Senior Finance Officer to join their team on a full time, temporary basis.


Some of your duties and responsibilities as a Senior Finance Officer will include:

  • Provide technical and practical assistance to the Finance Manager
  • Provide administrative and technical support as needed, including organising and taking minutes at internal and external meetings
  • Ensure the integrity of the financial data, within the parameters set by the Finance Manager
  • In liaison with the Finance Manager, allocate day to day duties of the finance department to ensure its efficient operation
  • Responsible for the data accuracy of all members of the finance team and to ensure that all deadlines are met
  • Support the Finance Manager in drafting and updating policies as required
  • Assist the Finance Manager with the process of the financial year end
  • Assist with the preparation of internal and external audit processes, ensuring that the process is efficient and organised
  • Support with the preparation of Governance processes
  • Responsible for ensuring that all cheque/BACS requisitions are raised, and paid promptly and accurately
  • Directly responsible for the college procurement process
  • Ensure compliance with the college's procurement procedures, in particular the requirements for quotations for goods and services at the set levels included in the Financial Regulations
  • Responsible for all student payments, including learner support funds and bursaries, ensuring that they are paid accurately and on time
  • Direct responsibility for ensuring that internet/credit card procurement operates efficiently and accurately
  • Monitor credit card statements to ensure that fraud is not committed and that purchases are wholly for business use
  • Ensure that all credit card statements are reconciled to source
  • Supervise the operation of the purchase ledger registration
  • Responsible for the operation of staff expenses
  • Assist the Finance Manager with the month end process for all ledger accruals
  • Supervise the operation of the college ordering system
  • Responsible for the operation of the AVA recharges income
  • Manage the petty cash system and ensure that the cash float is equal to the balance recorded on the finance system, including review and authorisation of data entry
  • Carry out bank reconciliations
  • Ensure that all funds owed to the college are collected in a timely fashion
  • Ensure direct debits (payments and sale ledger income) are processed daily and check bank statements for any outstanding payments or income
  • Responsibility for the operation of the sales ledger and ensure all income is collected, coded correctly and banked promptly
  • Ensure that non-sales ledger income is correctly banked and coded in the nominal ledger
  • Enter monthly payroll costs on to the finance system, ensuring that they are correctly coded
  • Update the payroll prediction spreadsheet
  • Oversee the college's insurance systems, including preparing annual renewal documents, liaison with the insurance company, any claimants and any other insurance related tasks
  • Asset tracking of the college mobile phones, keeping track of all usage charges and handsets
  • Organise and minute Risk Management meetings
  • Send out reminders when updates are required and consolidate returns on to the main register
  • Process updates following Risk Management meetings
  • Maintain college compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) by completing annual validation questionnaires, while ensuring internal controls and the compliance policy are up to date
  • Carry out scanning, photocopying and filing of finance documents
  • Provide training on the finance system to college staff, including new staff
  • Ensure that all finance information on the Staff Dashboard is kept up to date
  • Carry out other tasks as deemed reasonable and relevant for the department
  • Provide cover for colleagues within the team during periods of absence and annual leave, as required
  • Assist in the provision of a welcoming and professional finance service
  • Deal with any enquiries, suggestions or complaints swiftly and appropriately, referring issues to the line manager as necessary
  • Attend team meetings as required


  • Previously worked in a Finance Administration team
  • Used financial management software
  • Ability to deal with sales and purchase ledgers, petty cash and processing payments
  • Monitor budgets accurately
  • To be able to confidently deliver training on finance systems to staff
  • Dealt with the financial year-end process and understand what tasks needs to be completed at this time
  • Carry out auditing and familiar with the process behind this
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • High standard of Microsoft Office skills, specifically Excel
  • Ability to understand and analyse complex financial data
  • Ability to build and maintain positive and effective working relationships
  • Ability to analyse risk
  • Methodical and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of financial legislation
  • Knowledge and understanding of accounting concepts
