Senior Research Officer

3 month temporary contract

London WC1E / Remote

£19.32 per hour holiday pay

36.5 hours per week

Morgan Hunt are working with a University who are currently recruiting for a Senior Research Officer to join their team on a full time, temporary basis.

Some of your duties and responsibilities as a Senior Research Officer will include:

  • Organise the provision of financial data to inform costings for funding and proposals.
  • Prepare funding applications in conjunction with Principle Investigators including providing costing for proposed project.
  • Ensure that accounts and budgets for new awards are set up quickly and efficiently.
  • Monitor expenditure against grant budget and alerting relevant people on under and over-spends.
  • Work alongside academic and research staff to set and adhere to proposal deadlines as well as meet the sponsor's funding guidelines.
  • Oversee the proposal process and support senior colleagues in research management
  • Monitor proposal budgets to ensure financial viability and report to senior colleagues for approval as needed.
  • Organise contract set-up for newly awarded research projects.
  • Generate account codes in collaboration with senior research managers, Business and Contracts Research Office.
  • Maintain post-award support, advising grant holders as needed.
  • Work with grant holders to record outputs and assess impact.
  • Provide financial reports for grant activity.
  • Co-ordinate internal research funding by sending out and collecting application forms then circulating the forms around committee members for consideration. Once decisions have been made, the post holder will inform successful applicants.
  • Maintain minutes of funding committee meetings and records of awards distributed
  • Oversee the tracking, updating and maintenance of records and files of all correspondences, minutes and reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Prepare regular and accurate reports of the progress of projects and provide metrics in appropriate format for all relevant project stakeholders.
  • Initiate and monitor the process of research staff appointments and contract extensions as well as directly assist in the recruitment of new research staff.
  • Keep all information confidential and comply with data protection and ethics legislation.
  • Be responsible for distributing Research Bulletins and other research announcements.
  • Prepare and edit documents for internal and external circulation regarding departmental research.
  • Be the first point of contact for all enquiries relating to research activities.
  • Promote and publish research in the department to increase engagement and collaboration with industry through events, the web and other media.
  • Support the set-up of networks for industrial liaison for consultancy and for industry-academic projects.
  • Maintain a database of all research-consultancy projects and income generation for reporting to senior management.
  • Organise research seminar series within the department.
  • Produce materials to showcase the Department to a range of different potential partners
  • Support academic and research staff in fostering cooperative research links with other universities, industry and government agencies.
  • Organise relevant networking events to facilitate opportunities for cooperative research.
  • Develop internal and external networks and raise the profile of the department within the field.
  • Organise or assist in organising networking events, open days, lecture series, symposiums etc.
  • Liaise with departmental alumni, create and manage a database of contacts for events.
  • Prepare and maintain staff files for submission
  • Assist staff with online Research Staff Records.
  • Support the lead academic in all aspects of the report's preparation.
  • Communicate goals and deadlines to REF-selected staff.
  • Monitor and amend REF database.
  • Identify, monitor and record 'impact' in terms of research activity within the department.
  • Help to develop procedures for collating and presenting research portfolios and information concerning research impact.
  • Support the department's Scholarship Committee with its budget and funding calls.
  • Support the costing and monitoring of funded PhD scholarships.
  • Develop contacts with the Universities administrative departments and seeking advice on HR, Finance and legal matters as required.
  • Possess an understanding of Financial Regulations and apply it to the department's activities.
  • Provide basic cover for other administrative staff as required.
  • Continue to develop skills and knowledge in work practices, policies and procedures.


  • Knowledge of research funding processes and regulations within a Higher Education/research environment.
  • Previously worked within Higher Eeucation or similar research environment within the Public sector
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as on your own
  • Working knowledge of providing administrative assistance in the preparation of research funding applications.
  • Proven effective service in a customer service environment.
  • Ability to use online financial systems such as MyFinance and Worktribe.
  • Ability to use HR databases and systems (desirable)
  • To be able to organise meetings/events to facilitate networking and knowledge sharing (desirable)
  • Knowledge of providing administrative assistance in the preparation of REF submissions, or similar (desirable)
  • Knowledge of contemporary strategic issues and challenges facing both higher education and the research specialism of the department (desirable)
  • Sound IT knowledge including all Microsoft Office packages
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build / maintain professional working relationships with all stakeholders
  • A commitment to customer focus and the need to provide an efficient, professional and effective service to the many users and contacts both internally at all levels of the organisation and externally.
  • Consistent ability to meet tight individual and group deadlines and to manage own workload through effective prioritising, time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining close attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake training and adapt to new systems quickly
  • Excellent analytical skills including ability to research, analyse and interpret financial information.
  • Understand and interpret a variety of figures and statistics, and deliver accurately against operational deadlines.
  • Prepare and co-ordinate accurate reports, budgets and recommendations for a variety of uses.
  • Demonstrable ability to develop, maintain and review administrative and funding systems.
  • Ability to take initiative and contribute to decision making.
