Assistant Accountant


Euston, London

circa £29,794.96 per annum

Full Time, 35 hours per week

Morgan Hunt are working with a Membership Organisation who are currently recruiting for an Assistant Accountant to join their team on a full time, permanent basis. You will be reporting to the Financial Accountant and responsible for ensuring all sales and purchase invoices are processed promptly, accurately and in accordance with the organisation's policies and procedures. You will be an important liaison between the Finance department and key stakeholders within and out with the organisation.


Some of your responsibilities as an Assistant Accountant will include:

  • Input significant numbers of purchase invoices weekly and ensuring appropriately matched to purchase order system
  • Regular reconciliation of supplier statements
  • Operate weekly payment run for suppliers and staff expenses across 4 entities
  • Record cash book payments and receipts
  • Perform daily back-up and month end processes of purchase ledger and sales ledger, including running, checking and reconciling reports from computerised accounting system
  • Generate sales invoices in line with organisation guidelines
  • Assist with debt recovery procedures, including liaison with budget managers and overdue debtors
  • Maintain filing requirements for purchase and sales invoices
  • Assist with month-end procedures, including posting monthly recharge journals
  • Support with year-end audit file preparation and audit requests
  • Process invoices accurately and in a timely manner
  • Prepare sales invoices in timely manner
  • Preparing journals for all entries in line with reporting timetables
  • Reconciliation of key balance sheet control accounts used by the sales and purchase ledger
  • Be an active member of the staff team within the Finance department working closely with others and in line with our people values to ensure that the College is seen to be a responsive, courteous and efficient organisation both by its members and other key audiences.
  • Ad-hoc duties as requested by Financial Accountant


  • AAT or equivalent, or actively studying towards recognized accounting qualification.
  • Understanding of double entry and accounting principles
  • Ability to input and process payments and sales in line with controls
  • Working to tight deadlines
  • Good attention to details
  • Able to provide high quality customer support
  • Develop and maintain spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong IT knowledge
  • Knowledge and understanding of the recommended accounting standards and principles that have an impact on the College, including requirements under Companies Acts.
  • Knowledge and application of processing payments by BACS
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to deal with multiple stakeholders
  • Problem solving skills and ability to identify key issues
  • Customer focused and will to deliver high quality professional support
  • Ability to make presentations on financial information to non-finance staff
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office programs for financial reports/reporting
  • Public sector background (Essential)
