Permanent opportunity offering up to £ 36,514 Per Annum

My client are an established Further Education organisation that have an exciting opportunity for an experience IT Systems Engineer to join the team be responsible for the development and maintenance of the corporate computer system and service, including technical support for staff and student users. Working under the direction of the IT Systems Manager to provide support to all component parts of the computer system.

Role responsibilities:

  • Undertake the installation, configuration, operation, provisioning and maintenance of servers and applications working under various operating systems including Windows, MacOS and Linux to ensure the efficient delivery and operation of services and application software at the college.
  • Work under direction to carry out daily system checks and to correct faults.
  • Develop desktop/laptop/VDI/MacOS/iOS configurations - operating systems, images, local clients.
  • Assist in the planning, development, installation, security and maintenance of the college's local and wide area networks. This includes voice, wired infrastructure, wireless and services.
  • Undertake the creation and validation of systems documentation, procedures and processes and regularly check existing documentation for relevance and updating as necessary.
  • Collect and maintain service analytics and other records as required.
  • Compile and maintain accurate documentation and logs, detailing installation procedures, and operational and change control methods ensuring compliance with current college policies and procedures.
  • Work to install systems and applications software on servers and to ensure that systems are regularly patched.
  • Undertake the configuration and imaging of PCs, laptops with remote access facility and Apple Macintosh computers.
  • Attend all College sites as necessary to provide general systems support.
  • Plan and carry out file backup and retrieval routines. Recover specified files when required.
  • Assist in the monitoring and management of network performance and usage, taking prompt and appropriate action to resolve faults and problems and to maintain services.
  • Respond to Helpdesk requests for technical assistance, providing support as necessary.
  • Play a full role in maintaining continuous cover by the IT Systems team whenever necessary.
  • Undertake all duties involving access to data or user areas with integrity and in strict accordance to the requirements of the Data Protection Act (1998) and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers (RIP) Act 2000.
  • Contribute to special projects and events as required.
  • Assist in the preparation, updating, documenting and testing of a disaster recovery plan.
  • Undergo necessary training in order to keep abreast with developments in the IT sector.
  • Contribute to the department's self-assessment and quality improvement activities.

A successful IT Systems Engineer will have:

  • Experience of Cisco networking, server virtualisation (VMware), Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Office 365 administration, Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems, Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Software Center.
  • Experience of ITIL service delivery, Apple Mac operating systems, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams administration, G Suite administration would be desirable
  • Customer focussed approach with excellent communications skills
  • Be a team player who can work collaboratively within a team
  • Level 3 in an IT-related subject.
  • Working with a network system and a variety of workstation operating systems(CISCO)
  • Installation of hardware and software
  • Daily monitoring and administration tasks related to backups, application client server systems, printing, Active Directory, Office 365
  • Highly experience in server and systems administration (on-premise and in the cloud)
  • Well-developed technical and logical problem solving skills
  • Fundamental knowledge of networking i.e. TCP/IP, LAN & WAN
  • Familiar with Office 365 and Skype for Business administration
  • Knowledge of Linux system administration
  • Active Directory administration and troubleshooting including group policies
  • Desktop and Software deployment through SCCM using Admin Studio or similar solutions (e.g. Microsoft Intune)
  • Printing management systems, similar to Papercut
  • Backup management systems
  • Understanding and administration of virtual systems, VM Ware / Hyper-V
  • Methodical troubleshooting skills, able to clearly communicate written and spoken technical terminology
  • Ability to use a Helpdesk call priority management application working within a Service Level Agreement environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and autonomously as required
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills at all levels
  • Sufficient strength and dexterity to undertake standard campus operations tasks, e.g. moving computers and printers.
  • Demonstrable ability to deliver work objectives under pressure and the motivation to provide a high-quality service for customers.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise own workload to ensure deadlines are met
  • Available to work one evening a week on a regular basis and one other evening or occasionally at weekends by arrangement.
