Operation Manager - Grounds & Gardens

£40000 - £44500 per annum pension

Morgan Hunt is delighted to be partnering a client in Glasgow in their search for an Operation Manager - Grounds and Gardens.
Job Role:

To support the Head of Operations by providing leading professional technical expertise in grounds, horticulture, and biodiversity. Provide effective management to Grounds and Gardens Operations staff and external contractors across the sites in the provision of planned and reactive grounds, gardens, and hard landscaping maintenance services. To maintain the grounds to the required standard resulting in a clean, attractive, safe, and sustainable campus environment that supports the client's core objectives.

Responsibilities: (includes but not limited to)

  • Effectively manage the Grounds and gardens staff ensuring the delivery of the day-to-day operation. Responsible for leadership of operational staff including the Lead Horticulturalist.
  • Responsible for the completion of all annual planned maintenance programmes of the client's grounds assets in accordance with agreed standard
  • Manage allocated budgets for reactive and planned grounds maintenance, monitor expenditure against forecast, ensuring expenditure is planned and managed.
  • Lead Biodiversity/Arboriculturist Gardeners, Assistant Gardeners and apprentices through establishing performance indicators to ensure best practice.

  • Maintain awareness of all current horticultural, landscaping, biodiversity, and environmental updates.
  • Ensuring the grounds and gardens are maintained and developed through working closely with Facilities Managers.
  • Assess and determine jobs that will be undertaken by the in-house team and/or external Contractors,
  • Ensuring delivery of works and that all works are carried out in compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, codes of practice and the client's policies and procedures.
  • Lead on quality assurance and compliance management for grounds and landscaping management; ensure consistent service provision and compliance with all statutory & legislative standards, protocols, and procedures.
  • Support the Head of Frameworks and Contracts and colleagues in the management of framework agreements and term maintenance contracts for grounds maintenance, materials and equipment.

Knowledge /Qualifications


  • Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different role Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s) with a bias towards cleaning and waste service provision.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the work practices, processes, and procedures relevant to grounds maintenance management
  • Detailed knowledge of Horticulture and Arboriculture best practice and standards.
  • Good understanding of relevant health and safety policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality outputs and standards required.
