Job description

We have a current opportunity for a Moodle Developer on a permanent basis with our established HE Client in Glasgow.

Salary; £47-54k

Pension; 21% Employer

Annual Leave; 34 Days Bank Holidays

The Role:

To provide technical leadership for the enhancement of and operational support of the University's core Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Moodle and complementary learning solutions. This will involve high quality, appropriate and innovative technological solutions to challenges faced with the University's core VLE and complementary learning solutions alongside meeting day to day operational support demands for both staff and students.

Other duties include:

  • Responsible for technical leadership evaluating innovative technological solutions to meet pedagogic challenges and in line with existing and future University Learning and Teaching strategies.
  • Play a lead role in the planning of key improvement and upgrade projects for the University's core VLE service (Moodle) and complementary digital learning technologies. Work closely with other Information Services technical experts, senior stakeholders and external vendors (where required) to ensure a coherent, effective deployment or upgrade of learning technologies.
  • Provide expert advice/operational support to users of the University's core VLE service (Moodle) and complementary digital learning technologies in order for them to utilise systems to their full potential. Respond to support calls from staff and students using the IT Helpdesk System.
  • Responsible for the architectural and security related aspects of system design and implementation so that quality and secure systems support the University's critical processes
  • Communicate with relevant University IT services teams and University offices, third party suppliers and government bodies regarding legislative requirements and University regulations.

Skills/Experiences;

  • An excellent working and technical knowledge of Moodle VLE.
  • Knowledge of Linux command line development tools and administration.
  • Familiarity with system performance optimisation practices.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and understanding of issues related to technology-enhanced learning and teaching, including legislative requirements for digital accessibility.
  • A general awareness of other learning technologies and their use in education, such as Mahara and Turnitin plagiarism detection software.
  • Knowledge of up-to-date development methodologies including Agile, version control best practice, test driven development, continuous integration and change control.
  • Extensive in-depth range of computer development skills, specifically PHP, CSS, Javascript (ES6), Node.JS.
  • Linux system administration skills.
  • Significant experience of PHP Development and its latest features, for large corporate business solutions.
  • Proven experience of Moodle systems administration and of using Moodle core features and implementing additional vendor Plugins and LTI integrations.
  • Extensive experience writing, debugging and optimizing SQL queries (in a MySQL database environment) and Linux command line development tools.
  • Experience of web development using Javascript (ES6), CSS
