Research Infrastructure Engineer

We have a current opportunity for a Research Infrastructure Engineer on a permanent basis for our public sector client.

The position will be based in Dundee with the option to work on a remote basis, going on site once every 3 months for a quarterly meeting.

Salary: £33k-£52k DOE

Duties of the role;

• You will provide expertise and be part of the team implementing this next generation Safe Haven environment and secure research computing platform.
• You will have the opportunity to develop it in line with future requirements, while also contributing to the smooth running of the infrastructure operations of the 60 person research group.
• You will help to develop the management and monitoring tools and processes to operate the infrastructure in an optimal, proactive manner. As the infrastructure evolves, you will help design, implement and operate the fault management, performance management and service assurance processes and support tools required to deliver the business commitments of the institution.
• You will be expected to investigate the requirements of the research, software, data, business support teams and end users and to translate these into manageable infrastructure and system solutions. You will be expected to have a good understanding of state-of-the-art technologies available to match these requirements and to develop and advance that understanding as a part of your job.
• You will take a role in design and implementation and be a hands-on developer of new system components as required.
• You will be expected to include non-functional aspects such as performance, security, testability and compliance in addition to the functional aspects and to create well-structured solutions of clearly defined components and interfaces.
• You will need to own and manage your work streams and projects to completion as well as contribute to others. You will also take responsibility for and develop ownership of key work areas and to improve quality in all aspects of your work.
• You will be required to communicate regularly and clearly on complex and specialised issues both orally and in writing, sometimes to non-specialists, and may be required to draft and maintain specifications, procedures and processes within your area of responsibility.

Skills/Experience required;

• Scripting languages such as Python, BASH, Perl or PowerShell.
• Infrastructure as Code technologies (such as Ansible, Terraform and CloudFormation).
• Basic understanding of computing system architecture.
• Skilled/experienced in cloud architecture and deployment;
• Experience of having a significant role in infrastructure projects including design and implementation;
• Experience of working with health or research data;
• Experience of working within ISO27001 or secure environments with other compliance standards;
• Experience in a customer facing role where you had to understand requirements and use initiative to design solutions to meet requirements.
