Morgan Hunt is proud to be partnering with a regulator in the legal services sector. My client is looking for a 'Senior Policy Officer' on a permanent basis. As a 'Senior Policy Officer', you will be responsible for overseeing a series of policy initiatives aimed at regulating legal services business and professionals in the public interest. This involves holding those in the legal profession to a code of conduct, supporting junior professionals in the early stages of their career whilst providing advice to consumers of legal services. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone with a background in legal or regulatory policy development looking to join a fast expanding policy team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on the implementation of various policy initiative in relation to the regulator's Policy Development Framework. This may involve policy and project work across the full range of Policy and Research business.
  • Oversee targeted reviews of specific policy areas/sections of the regulator's Code of Conduct Handbook in light of relevant regulatory risks.
  • Engage with other regulators within the legal services sector to agree upon any changes to the organisation's regulatory arrangements.
  • Ensure policy proposals and formulation are backed by solid evidence.
  • Maintaining programme and project documentation where appropriate, ensuring work is undertaken to time and on budget.
  • Drafting key policy documents (including consultation papers, analysis of responses and preparation/presentation of Committee/Board papers with appropriate recommendations and/or applications to the LSB for approval).
  • Ensuring policy creation is future proofed by anticipating ramifications of policy changes on other areas (e.g. training requirements, enforcement policy, monitoring and supervision), co-ordinating discussions with other BSB teams or external stakeholders.
  • Providing planning and project management expertise where required in the Policy and Research Team, including allocation of tasks to other members of the team, including the Policy Officer.
  • Responding to public enquiries about the organisation's Code of Conduct Handbook, whilst delivering training on the Handbook and associated policy changes, drafting guidance documents and communications plans.

Person Specification

  • Understanding of the legal services environment and interest in issues relating to professional practice, risk and regulation.
  • Ability to communicate and present complex information both in writing and verbally to a range of audiences effectively.
  • Experience of developing and evaluating policy in a regulatory context.
  • Credible with senior stakeholders. Comfortable representing organisation externally.
  • Attention to detail with strong project and time management skills and able to work to tight deadlines
  • Well-developed strategic thinking and analytical skills, including the ability to source and interpret complex data.
