H&S Advisor - Audit

Job description

We have a current opportunity for a H&S Advisor - Audit on a 6 month fixed term basis. The position will be based in Cambridge with the option for some home working.

Purpose of the role

The role is within the Safety Office and supports the Management of Health and Safety across the University by providing internal audit of Health and Safety management procedures and practice. To enable the University to identify weaknesses and implement changes so as to ensure improvement in health and safety and wellbeing of all staff and students.

Follow the Safety Office audit process to monitor the level of compliance within Departments of University Health and safety policy and procedure, by preparing and conducting internal audits of performance against accepted standards in health and safety management. The conduct of internal audits is essential to measure compliance with University Policy and legislative requirements.

Key responsibilities

1. Review documentary evidence and Departmental internal safety online systems prior to audit to best understand the Departmental management systems in place.
2. Undertake audit assignments to final reporting stage, liaising with Heads of Department, Departmental Safety Officers, other key safety roles and staff members to facilitate the audit process. To report any significant issues/non compliance to the Head of Department and Safety Office safety advisor for audit.
3. Conduct Departmental safety audits as per audit program and question set defined by the Safety Office, adhering to dates and times organised by the audit clerk.
4. During audit undertake dynamic risk assessments to identify and evaluate functional weaknesses, taking into consideration cost factors, previous audit findings and requirements of University policy and external legislation.
5. Give verbal advice during the audit on the identified weaknesses in current procedures and areas of improvement. Promote good practice and give working examples of solutions to weaknesses identified.
6. Give feedback on good practice identified.
7. Presentation of audit findings to key Departmental staff including formation of improvement actions to ensure that the audit outcomes add value and lead to improved effectiveness in Departmental health and safety management. Judgements made to adhere to Safety Office consistency guidance.
8. Timely recording and presenting audit findings using the online Assessnet audit report system,
9. Inform the Safety Advisor - audit, where findings and recommendations have policy/procedure implications that require Senior leadership or committee level discussion and decision.
