Data Engineer

Job description

We have a current opportunity for a Data Engineer to work with our public sector client on a number of Health Data projects. The role can be be performed from anywhere in the UK with only 1 day per quarter required on site for a quarterly meeting.

This position requires someone who can think laterally, someone with the confidence to question established practices and look at innovative ways to solve complex health data management problems. Being proactive, with a can-do attitude will be a distinct advantage.

You must be able to work alone, and to agreed client deadlines. You must also be able to steward projects to completion, provide support for others and take ownership, driving key work areas within the data team.

You will regularly be required to communicate clearly on complex and specialised issues both orally and in writing, often to non-specialists and may be required to draft revised policies, procedures and processes within own work area.

As part of an ISO27001 accredited organisation, you'll be expected to be part of data governance, the use of privacy enhancing technologies, third parties, and other methods essential for the safe use of patient data.

Other duties include;

• Be the primary point of communication with clients, managing day to day project progress and ensuring rigorous and timely delivery of tasks
• Explaining technical processes to clients and support them throughout projects
• Working with the information Governance manager to draft technical/governance documentation and data management plans
• Undertaking data mapping and performing data analysis/engineering
• Using the clinical data repository to identify and create data extracts for clinical research purposes.
• Routine and ad-hoc data curation activities requiring hands-on development of bespoke data transformation using cleaning scripts in languages such as SQL and Python.
• Maintain and enhance security policies deployed to protect unauthorised access to the data, while supporting research and operating in an ISO27001 accredited organisation.

Skills/Experience Required;

• Experience in cleaning, processing, managing and manipulating of datasets
• Client relationship management specifically experience of working with clients to understand their requirements and be able to create solutions that meet these requirements.
• Experience in ETL techniques, tools (including Python, or similar) and design.
• Experience in cleaning, processing, managing and manipulating of large datasets
• Experience with physical relational (and ideally non-relational) database design.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to technical staff, senior management and non-technical partners.
• Excellent relational database skills, with an emphasis on T-SQL scripting skills and MS SQL.
