Overview

Morgan Hunt are delighted to be working with a North West based charity who are looking to recruit a Housing First Worker. This is a permanent role working 37 hours per week, with some flexibility required to meet the needs of the service. As a Housing First Worker, you will cover Greater Manchester however will be based predominantly across Bolton and Bury.

What is Housing First

Housing First is a housing and support approach which gives people who have experienced homelessness and chronic health and social care needs a stable home from which to rebuild their lives. It aims to provide intensive, person - centred, holistic support that is open ended. Mainstream services are often not equipped to support individuals with overlapping complex, support needs resulting in tenancy failure. Housing First has been shown to be effective in supporting people with histories of street homelessness, or other types of homelessness where contact with services has been unsuccessful in breaking the cycle of instability. Housing First can be adapted for specific groups, including people with repeated hospital use or custodial sentences.

The organisation

Our client's mission is to reduce homelessness through getting people on low incomes into private rented accommodation. This organisation provides Bond Guarantees for tenancies which take the place of cash deposits and provide security for landlords. Furthermore, they offer a range of support services for tenants to make a tenancy more manageable and sustainable for the long term.

The role - Housing First Worker

As a Housing First Worker, you will be responsible for coordinating and providing a personalised support service to people with complex needs facing multiple exclusion in line with Housing First Principles. You will use a strength-based support service, with the aim of creating long term sustainable tenancies by increasing independence and maximising connectivity with the local community.

  • Deliver wrap around intensive, informed support to people with multiple and complex issues within their own independent tenancies in the community
  • Maintain accurate records on the chosen case management system of progress against individual support plans, safety plans and agreed outcomes
  • Liaise with other agencies to facilitate access to support including Adult Social Care; Criminal Justice services; Health services; employment and training agencies
  • Regularly review the person-centred support plan to update, record and monitor progress of caseload
  • Build and maintain networks with staff from other agencies to ensure the Housing First pilot is widely known and promoted
  • Liaise with landlords to assist the person living in accommodation of their choice; including practical help with furniture; benefits advice and accompanied visits
  • Perform robust assessments of referrals for the service to ensure the service is provided to those that meet the eligibility criteria
  • Facilitate access to the personalisation fund via creative solutions to integrate people into the community and access accommodation
  • Complete dynamic risk assessments and maintain own safety by following lone working procedures

The candidate

  • At least 2 years, full-time (or part time equivalent) proven experience of empowering people with multiple, complex interdependencies (e.g. mental health, homeless, substance abuse and offending behaviour) to assess and manage risk, achieve sustainability and make positive choices
  • A good understanding of the services and provision generally available for vulnerable and homeless people in crisis and experience of accessing those services and developing networks across a wide range of services, such as housing, benefits and health
  • Excellent personal communication skills when working with vulnerable people and other professionals in order to build rapport, enable problem solving, promote rights and responsibilities and encourage informed choice
  • The ability to manage and prioritise a case load effectively and to maintain accurate service user records and monitoring information
  • Ability to work flexibly (including outside of office hours when needed), autonomously and in collaboration with a keen and enthusiastic team, sharing tasks and contributing to the development of the service
  • The capability to maintain clear professional boundaries whilst working in a client-centred manner and ability to identify and act on safeguarding concerns
  • Good I.T skills in order to use a variety of software packages, e.g. word, excel and case management systems
  • Full driving licence and use of a car for work
  • An understanding of the Housing First model and a belief in the values and principles of it would also be desirable
