Job description

Morgan Hunt are currently recruiting for a Senior Java Developer to work on a permanent basis with our public sector client based in Glasgow.

Salary: £48k - £56k

Annual Leave: 41 Days

Generous Pension

Working Model: Hybrid, 1 day on-site per week

Role Profile: As a Senior Java Developer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining core corporate business information systems that operate across the administrative and research functions. Your focus will be on delivering substantial technology solutions to maximise service quality and efficiency while meeting service standards and requirements.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Lead initial investigations in the early stages of new system development. Gather, analyse, and document complex system requirements, working collaboratively with users to ensure technical solutions effectively support business processes, adding significant value to the organisation.
  2. Design, develop, and test new systems, producing detailed design specifications and documentation. Ensure that the delivered system meets user requirements and expectations at all stages.
  3. Take responsibility for the architectural and security-related aspects of system design and implementation, ensuring the development of quality, secure systems that support critical organisational processes.
  4. Implement, upgrade, maintain, and support systems, whether developed in-house or third-party packages. Provide comprehensive technical documentation and assess and manage the business impact of changes.
  5. Offer expert advice to system users, responding to support calls from staff and students through the IT Helpdesk System.
  6. Provide ongoing system support to ensure consistent availability and optimal performance for users relying on these systems for their roles.
  7. Plan and manage the work of others when required, including mentoring and providing direction to less experienced team members or contractors.
  8. Communicate with third-party suppliers, government bodies, and relevant organisation offices and committees regarding legislative requirements and organisation regulations.
  9. Attend training courses and conferences to stay updated on new technologies and maintain relevant skills.
  10. Evaluate new technologies, produce utilisation guidelines, and deliver familiarisation sessions to enhance Service productivity and service quality.

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Ability to demonstrate competencies required for the role. Professional knowledge and management skills gained in a similar specialist role(s) or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive knowledge in Web Application Development, Web development tools, RDBMS (e.g., Oracle), Security technologies, and Agile development practices
  • Developing and implementing Web Services (SOAP & RESTful).
  • Knowledge of application servers: WildFly.
  • Understanding of FOI and DPA legislation.
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility requirements including WCAG standard.

Experience:

  • Substantial full systems lifecycle design experience, including requirements analysis and writing technical specifications.
  • Consistent track record of developing complex solutions using specified technologies.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a development team environment, meeting deadlines.
  • Planning workload using judgement and initiative, including assigning tasks to junior staff.
  • Broad professional experience supporting and maintaining large corporate business systems.
  • Experience working within multi-skilled agile project teams.
