Overview:
We are currently recruiting on behalf of a respected London-based college for a committed and compassionate SEND Learning Support Assistant to support learners with a range of special educational needs and disabilities, including PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties), MLD (Moderate Learning Difficulties), and LLDD (Learners with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities).
This is a vital role within the Learning Support / Additional Learning Support team, aimed at delivering high-quality, learner-centred assistance that promotes independence, inclusion, and meaningful progress.
Key Responsibilities:
Learner Support:
Provide one-to-one and in-class support for learners with complex needs.
Deliver support in line with EHCPs, learning plans, and risk assessments.
Assist with the development of learners' communication, sensory, cognitive, and physical skills.
Support personal care tasks (e.g., feeding, hygiene, toileting), manual handling, and mobility requirements.
Facilitate the use of specialist and assistive technologies.
Encourage learner independence, self-esteem, and integration.
Curriculum Support:
Collaborate with teaching staff to adapt and deliver differentiated curriculum content.
Support the teaching of life skills, vocational and employability programmes.
Assist with structured activities, sensory sessions, and enrichment initiatives.
Communication and Liaison:
Maintain effective communication with learners, families/carers, and professionals.
Contribute to EHCP reviews and learner progress meetings.
Record and report on learner development and any incidents or concerns.
Professional Development and Conduct:
Attend all required training, including safeguarding, manual handling, and medical protocols.
Adhere to college policies on safeguarding, equality and diversity, behaviour management, and health and safety.
Promote dignity, respect, and inclusion at all times.
Undertake any other duties as directed by the line manager.
Person Specification:
Essential:
Experience supporting learners with SEND, including PMLD, LLDD or MLD.
Understanding of inclusive education and SEND support strategies.
Ability to provide personal care and physical support respectfully.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Calm and effective response in challenging situations.
Commitment to equality, dignity, and learner independence.
Desirable:
Experience in Further Education or post-16 settings.
Knowledge of EHCPs and relevant statutory frameworks.
Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching & Learning, Health and Social Care).
Training in Positive Behaviour Support, Team Teach, or Manual Handling.
Understanding of sensory integration and therapeutic interventions.
This position involves direct work with children and vulnerable adults. An Enhanced DBS check, including barred list information for both child and adult workforce, registered on the DBS Update Service, is required before appointment.
