Job Purpose
To deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment in Mechanical Engineering across Further Education programmes. The post holder will support learners to develop strong technical, practical, and employability skills, enabling progression into apprenticeships, higher education, or skilled employment.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive, and effective lessons in Mechanical Engineering
- Teach across a range of levels (e.g. Entry Level, Level 2-3, T Levels, Apprenticeships)
- Deliver both theoretical and practical workshop-based learning
- Embed Maths, English, and digital skills within vocational teaching
- Differentiate teaching to meet the needs of learners with diverse abilities
Assessment and Learner Progress
- Assess learners' work in line with awarding body and college requirements
- Provide timely, high-quality feedback to support progress and achievement
- Monitor learner attendance, progress, and behaviour
- Support learners with additional learning needs in collaboration with support teams
Curriculum and Quality
- Contribute to curriculum planning and development to meet industry demand
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date learner records
- Prepare learners for assessments, exams, and workplace practice
- Participate in internal quality assurance, standardisation, and continuous improvement activities
Industry and Professional Practice
- Maintain current industry knowledge and awareness of emerging technologies
- Ensure teaching reflects modern mechanical engineering practices, standards, and health & safety requirements
- Develop and maintain effective links with employers and industry partners
College Responsibilities
- Act as a personal tutor where required
- Participate in recruitment, enrolment, and open events
- Engage in continuous professional development (CPD)
- Adhere to safeguarding, health & safety, equality, and diversity policies
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications
- Level 3 qualification or above in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards one (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed, Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training)
- English and Maths at Level 2 (GCSE grade 4/C or equivalent)
Experience
- Significant, recent industry experience in mechanical engineering or manufacturing
- Experience working with apprentices, trainees, or junior staff
- Experience using industry-standard machinery, tools, or systems
Skills and Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of mechanical principles (e.g. machining, fitting, maintenance, CAD/CAM, hydraulics/pneumatics as applicable)
- Ability to deliver both practical and classroom-based teaching
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Competence with IT and digital learning platforms
Desirable Criteria
- Teaching experience within FE, HE, or a training provider
- Assessor and/or Internal Verifier qualifications (TAQA, A1, V1)
- Experience with specific specialisms (e.g. CNC machining, CAD software, robotics, maintenance engineering)
- Knowledge of apprenticeships, T Levels, or vocational awarding bodies (e.g. City & Guilds, Pearson, EAL)
