Job Purpose

To plan, deliver and assess high-quality teaching and learning across a range of vocational construction and multi-skills programmes, supporting learners to achieve their qualifications and progress to employment, apprenticeships, or further study.

The post holder will contribute to curriculum development, learner support, and continuous improvement in line with Ofsted and college quality standards.


Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver engaging, inclusive and effective teaching across a range of multi-skills subjects (e.g. basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting & decorating, and general construction skills) at Entry Level to Level 2/3 as required.
  • Plan lessons and schemes of work that meet awarding body and curriculum requirements.
  • Differentiate learning to meet the needs of diverse learners, including SEND and learners with additional support needs.
  • Use a variety of teaching methods to promote practical skills, knowledge, and employability behaviours.

Assessment & Quality

  • Assess learner work accurately and in line with awarding body requirements.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to support learner progress.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date learner records, including attendance, progress tracking, and assessment documentation.
  • Prepare learners for internal and external assessments, including practical observations.

Learner Support & Safeguarding

  • Act as a personal tutor where required, supporting learner welfare, attendance, and progression.
  • Promote positive behaviour and maintain a safe, inclusive learning environment.
  • Follow safeguarding, Prevent, health & safety, and equality & diversity policies at all times.

Curriculum & Team Contribution

  • Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement activities.
  • Participate in team meetings, standardisation, moderation, and quality assurance processes.
  • Liaise with employers, apprenticeship teams, and external partners where required.
  • Support open events, enrolment, and promotional activities.

Professional Development

  • Maintain vocational currency and industry knowledge.
  • Engage in CPD to improve teaching practice and meet professional standards.
  • Work towards or maintain a recognised teaching qualification if not already held.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications & Experience

  • Relevant vocational qualification(s) in construction or multi-skills (e.g. Level 3 or above).
  • Experience working in the construction industry or a related vocational field.
  • Experience teaching or training learners in an FE, training, or workplace setting (or willingness to train).

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to teach across multiple trade disciplines at foundation/intermediate level.
  • Strong classroom and workshop management skills.
  • Knowledge of health & safety requirements in a practical learning environment.
  • Ability to assess learner work and provide effective feedback.
  • Good IT skills, including use of e-learning platforms and learner tracking systems.

  • Organised, flexible, and able to manage a varied workload.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, safeguarding, and British Values.

Desirable Criteria

  • Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed, Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training).
  • Assessor qualification (e.g. TAQA, A1, CAVA).
  • Experience teaching Entry Level or disengaged learners.
  • Industry certifications (e.g. CSCS, First Aid, SMSTS/SSSTS).
  • Experience delivering employability or functional skills within vocational programmes.
