Job Purpose

To deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment in Carpentry and Joinery across a range of FE programmes, ensuring learners develop the practical skills, technical knowledge, and behaviours required for employment or progression within the construction industry.




Key Responsibilities



Teaching and Learning

Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive and effective lessons in Carpentry and Joinery.

Teach across a range of levels (e.g. Level 1-3, T Levels, Apprenticeships, or adult provision as required).

Deliver practical workshop sessions and underpinning theoretical knowledge in line with awarding body specifications.

Use a variety of teaching strategies to meet the needs of learners with diverse abilities and backgrounds.

Embed English, maths, digital skills, safeguarding and employability skills into teaching.



Assessment and Learner Progress

Assess learners' work accurately and fairly in line with awarding body and college requirements.

Provide timely, constructive feedback to support learner progress and achievement.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date learner records, including registers, assessment tracking and progress reviews.

Support learners to achieve their full potential, including those with additional learning needs.



Curriculum and Quality

Contribute to the development and review of Carpentry and Joinery curriculum and learning materials.

Ensure teaching meets Ofsted, awarding body and internal quality standards.

Participate in lesson observations, standardisation and internal verification as required.

Keep vocational knowledge current and aligned with industry practices and standards.



Pastoral and Professional Duties

Act as a personal tutor where required, supporting learners' welfare, attendance and progression.

Promote positive behaviour, equality, diversity and inclusion.

Work collaboratively with colleagues, support staff and external partners.

Comply with all college policies, including health and safety, safeguarding and data protection.

Participate in staff meetings, training, CPD and performance review processes.

Essential Qualifications

Relevant Level 3 qualification or above in Carpentry and Joinery (or equivalent).

Teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, CertEd, DTLLS) or willingness to work towards one.

Assessor qualification (e.g. TAQA/A1) or willingness to obtain.



Essential Experience

Recent and relevant industry experience in Carpentry and Joinery.

Experience of working with timber, tools, machinery and workshop environments.

Experience of maintaining high standards of health and safety.

Ability to deliver practical and theoretical teaching effectively.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Good organisational and time management skills.

Commitment to learner success and inclusive education.

Ability to motivate and inspire learners of varying abilities.

Competent IT skills, including use of learning platforms and digital tools.
