Make a Difference in Housing The London Borough of Redbridge is looking for an experienced Allocations Officer to join its busy Housing Needs & Allocations Team on a contract basis.
This is an excellent opportunity for a housing professional with a strong understanding of housing allocations legislation, choice-based lettings, and social housing policy to play a key role in helping residents access suitable accommodation.
You will be responsible for assessing housing register applications, managing applicants through the allocations process, and ensuring that all decisions are made in accordance with housing legislation, statutory guidance and the Council's Allocation Scheme.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and process new Housing Register applications in line with the Council's Allocation Scheme. Verify applicant's eligibility, qualification and priority, ensuring accurate banding decisions are made.
- Maintain and update housing application records using the Council's housing management systems.
- Investigate changes in applicant's circumstances and amend applications where appropriate.
- Respond to enquiries from applicants, elected members and partner agencies regarding housing register applications and allocations. Provide clear advice and guidance on housing options, bidding processes and allocation decisions.
- Carry out reviews and reassessments of housing register applications where required.
- Liaise with Registered Providers, internal departments and external agencies to facilitate property nominations.
- Monitor property offers, refusals and lettings to ensure targets are achieved.
- Ensure compliance with the Housing Act 1996 (as amended), the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017 and relevant housing legislation.
- Prepare written correspondence, decision letters and reports to a high standard. Maintain accurate case records and ensure all work is completed within agreed performance targets.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working as an Allocations Officer within a UK Local Authority.
- Strong knowledge of Part VI of the Housing Act 1996 and housing allocations legislation.
- Experience administering Housing Registers and Choice Based Lettings schemes.
- Ability to interpret housing legislation, allocation policies and statutory guidance.
- Experience using local authority housing systems such as NEC Housing, Jigsaw, Civica, Locata or similar.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to manage a busy caseload while meeting performance deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel.

Desirable Skills - Experience working with Locata Choice Based Lettings.
- Knowledge of housing mobility schemes.
- Experience dealing with complex housing register reviews.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and equality legislation.
