Position: Construction Technician

Location: East London

Salary: £20 - £30 Per Hour

Contract: Full-time, 35 hours per week

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Construction Technician to join our Construction Department. Working alongside our Construction Lecturers, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality practical teaching and learning across a range of construction programmes, including brickwork, carpentry and joinery, plumbing, painting and decorating, and other construction trades.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced construction professional who enjoys sharing their knowledge and contributing to the development of the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare workshops, classrooms, tools, equipment, and materials for practical lessons across a range of construction disciplines.
  • Support lecturers during practical training sessions, ensuring students work safely and effectively.
  • Maintain construction workshops and practical training areas to a high standard, ensuring tools, machinery, and equipment are clean, serviced, organised, and ready for use.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and safety checks on workshop equipment and report any faults or defects.
  • Monitor, organise, and replenish stocks of materials, consumables, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, COSHH requirements, and college policies.
  • Assist with setting up practical assessments, demonstrations, exhibitions, skills competitions, and college open events.
  • Support learners by providing technical guidance under the direction of lecturers.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment servicing, inventory, and stock levels.
  • Contribute to creating a safe, organised, and engaging learning environment for students and staff.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Relevant industry experience in one or more construction disciplines.
  • Good knowledge of construction methods, workshop practices, and current health and safety legislation.
  • Experience using a wide range of construction tools, equipment, and machinery safely.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly across different construction curriculum areas.

Desirable

  • Experience working in an educational or training environment.
  • Assessing or teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one).
  • Knowledge of modern methods of construction and sustainable building practices.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Experience of maintaining workshop equipment and managing stock and resources.
