About

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a specialist contractor delivering technically complex facilities across advanced manufacturing, cleanrooms, life sciences, pharmaceutical production, laboratories and other highly controlled environments. This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer currently working within a building services consultancy who is looking to transition into contracting and gain greater exposure to the full project lifecycle.

You will work on challenging projects, taking mechanical design packages from technical development through to installation, commissioning and handover. Working closely with project managers, site teams, clients and supply chain partners, you will develop a broader understanding of project delivery, buildability, procurement and commercial performance.

Experience within cleanrooms, laboratories, pharmaceutical or healthcare environments would be advantageous. However, we are particularly interested in engineers who have worked on large, complex healthcare or hospital projects, where technical coordination, critical building services and multidisciplinary design are essential. With significant investment across these specialist sectors, this is an opportunity to join a growing business and develop your career beyond traditional consultancy design.

  • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in mechanical building services design, ideally within a consultancy environment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical building services systems, design calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary designs and managing complex technical interfaces.
  • An understanding of relevant industry standards, regulations and building services design principles.
  • Awareness of construction methodologies, installation requirements and the practical challenges of delivering complex projects.
  • An interest in developing commercial awareness, including project costs, procurement, value engineering and programme management.
  • Experience in cleanrooms, controlled environments, life sciences or advanced manufacturing would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • Strong communication, coordination and problem-solving skills.
  • Chartered status or working towards professional accreditation would be advantageous, but is not essential.

  • Coordinate mechanical systems with electrical, architectural, structural and other building services disciplines.
  • Contribute to design reviews, value engineering and the development of efficient, cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Consider the impact of design decisions on procurement, installation costs, programme and overall project performance.
  • Support commissioning and handover activities to ensure completed systems meet the required specifications and performance criteria.
  • Build an understanding of the commercial and operational aspects of specialist contracting, developing the skills needed to take on greater responsibility over time.
