Civil Engineering Lecturer (Further Education)

3 Days per week, possibility for 4/5.

Job Purpose

To deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment across Level 3 and Level 4 Civil Engineering programmes, enabling students to develop the technical knowledge, practical skills and professional behaviours required for employment or progression to higher education. The successful candidate will plan and deliver engaging lessons, assess learner achievement, and contribute to curriculum development while maintaining high standards of academic quality and student support.







Key Teaching Responsibilities

Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) Level 4 Civil Engineering

Unit 1 - Construction Design Project (Pearson Set)

  • Deliver project-based learning focused on the construction design process from concept through to detailed design.
  • Teach students how to produce and interpret technical drawings using CAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM) principles.
  • Guide learners in producing specifications, schedules, material selections and project documentation.
  • Support students in applying project management techniques, teamwork and professional presentation skills.
  • Supervise and assess the Pearson-set assignment in accordance with awarding body requirements.

Unit 3 - Science and Materials

  • Teach engineering science principles relevant to civil engineering, including forces, mechanics and material behaviour.
  • Develop learners' understanding of construction materials such as concrete, steel, timber, asphalt and composites.
  • Explain material properties, testing methods, durability, sustainability and appropriate material selection.
  • Deliver practical demonstrations and laboratory activities where appropriate to reinforce theoretical concepts.

Unit 19 - Principles of Structural Design

  • Teach the principles of structural behaviour and load paths in civil engineering structures.
  • Develop students' understanding of dead, imposed and environmental loading.
  • Introduce structural analysis, stability, stress, strain and structural safety considerations.
  • Support learners in applying British Standards and Eurocodes to basic structural design problems.
  • Develop learners' ability to evaluate structural solutions using engineering calculations and technical justification.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/Extended Diploma in Civil Engineering

Unit 4 - Construction Technology

  • Deliver teaching on modern construction methods and civil engineering techniques.
  • Cover foundations, substructures, superstructures, groundworks and infrastructure construction.
  • Teach the use of construction plant, equipment and temporary works.
  • Develop learner understanding of sustainable construction methods, health and safety legislation and quality assurance.
  • Use real industry examples to demonstrate current construction practices and emerging technologies.

Unit 11 - Site Engineering for Construction (selected content)

  • Introduce learners to essential site engineering practices.
  • Teach surveying principles including levelling, setting out and measurement techniques.
  • Develop understanding of site control, earthworks and construction tolerances.
  • Support learners in interpreting engineering drawings and site documentation.
  • Demonstrate the safe use of surveying equipment and digital technologies where available.

General Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality lessons using a range of teaching strategies.
  • Assess learner work in accordance with Pearson assessment criteria and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Monitor learner progress and implement intervention strategies where required.
  • Maintain accurate assessment records and contribute to Internal Verification (IV) and quality assurance processes.
  • Support students with academic tutorials, pastoral care and progression planning.
  • Develop learning resources that reflect current civil engineering industry practice.
  • Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding in all aspects of teaching.
  • Participate in curriculum development, standardisation meetings, employer engagement activities and college events.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments within the civil engineering and construction sectors through continuous professional development (CPD).

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Degree or HNC/HND (or equivalent higher qualification) in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience working within the civil engineering or construction industry.
  • Experience delivering or assessing BTEC, HNC/HND or similar vocational qualifications is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of structural principles, construction technology, engineering materials and site engineering practices.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and learner support skills.
  • Ability to use digital learning platforms, Microsoft Office and engineering software such as AutoCAD (desirable).
  • Teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent), or willingness to achieve one.
