Job: Homeless Outreach Worker - Rough sleepers
Location: Birmingham
Hours: Monday-Friday
Contract: Temporary till March 2026
We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Homeless Outreach Worker in Birmingham to support people who are rough sleeping, begging, and experiencing multiple and complex needs. You will work across various locations and times, providing assertive outreach, reducing harm, and helping individuals access accommodation, healthcare, substance misuse services, and mental health support.
Key Responsibilities of a Homeless Outreach Worker
Engage rough sleepers through street outreach across multiple locations and shift patterns.
Support entrenched rough sleepers, including those reluctant to engage.
Assist hospital discharges by securing rapid accommodation.
Work with drug, alcohol, and mental health teams to ensure access to treatment and support.
Encourage new rough sleepers to seek alternatives and support reconnections to home communities.
Liaise with Housing Strategy teams and Supported Housing Providers.
Participate in multi-agency meetings, case conferences, and street counts.
Maintain accurate, confidential service user records.
Person Specification for Homeless Outreach Worker
Essential:
Understanding of rough sleeping, substance misuse, mental health, and complex needs.
Experience working in partnership with multiple agencies.
Strong communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
Ability to work independently and manage challenging behaviour.
IT literacy and good administrative skills.
Willingness to work unsociable hours.
Experience in outreach, homelessness services, or substance misuse.
