Job Purpose

To deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment in Motor Vehicle Studies across a range of qualifications (e.g. Level 1-3 programmes, apprenticeships, and adult learning), ensuring students achieve outstanding outcomes and develop the technical, professional, and employability skills required for progression into the automotive industry.



Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

Plan, prepare and deliver engaging theoretical and practical lessons in motor vehicle technology (light vehicle, diagnostics, servicing and repair).

Teach across programmes such as IMI or City & Guilds automotive qualifications (or equivalent).

Deliver apprenticeship training in line with relevant standards (e.g. Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician - Light Vehicle).

Differentiate learning to meet individual student needs, including SEND and EHCP learners.

Embed English, maths, digital skills, sustainability and British Values within the curriculum where appropriate.



Assessment & Quality

Assess student work in line with awarding body requirements and internal quality assurance procedures.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of attendance, progress and achievement.

Provide timely and constructive feedback to support student progress.

Participate in internal verification (IV) and standardisation activities.

Contribute to quality improvement processes, including self-assessment reports and Ofsted preparation.



Industry & Curriculum Development

Maintain up-to-date industry knowledge and technical competence.

Liaise with employers to support work placements, apprenticeships and industry projects.

Contribute to curriculum development to ensure provision meets local and national skills priorities.

Ensure workshop environments meet health & safety regulations and industry standards.



Student Support & Pastoral Care

Act as a personal tutor to a group of students, providing academic and pastoral guidance.

Monitor attendance and behaviour, implementing appropriate interventions where necessary.

Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion across all activities.



Professional Development

Engage in continuing professional development (CPD).

Work towards a recognised teaching qualification (if not already held) within agreed timescales.



Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

Level 3 qualification (or above) in Motor Vehicle Technology or related discipline.

GCSE (or equivalent) English and Mathematics at Grade C/4 or above.

Relevant industry-recognised qualifications (e.g. IMI, City & Guilds).

Desirable Qualifications

Teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed, or Level 5 Diploma in Education & Training).

Assessor qualification (e.g. TAQA, A1, or equivalent).

Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) qualification.

Essential Experience

Recent industry experience in light vehicle maintenance and repair.

Experience of delivering practical workshop-based training.

Experience of assessing learners' work against awarding body standards.

Desirable Experience

Experience working within a Further Education setting in the UK.

Experience delivering apprenticeship standards.

Experience supporting learners with additional needs.

Knowledge & Skills

Strong technical knowledge of modern vehicle systems (including diagnostics, hybrid and electric vehicles desirable).

Excellent classroom and workshop management skills.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to motivate and inspire learners from diverse backgrounds.

Competent in using IT systems for tracking learner progress.
