Croydon Almshouses | Croydon (hybrid - up to 40% WFH)

Permanent | £60,000 - £65,000 | 30-37.5 hours per week (flexible)

About us

There aren't many organisations that can say they've been serving their community for over 550 years. Croydon Almshouses can and we're proud to be the oldest charity in Croydon, rooted in a long-standing commitment to local people and place.

Since 1447, we've provided almshouse accommodation to older people with a connection to Croydon who are negatively affected by poverty. For the past 40 years, we've also awarded grants to voluntary, community and faith sector organisations, and individuals across the Borough.

Now, our focus is firmly on what comes next. Our vision is to create thriving communities where everybody can live with dignity and independence, using our resources and agility to reduce the impact of poverty on people in Croydon.

To help us deliver this, we're recruiting a Head of Finance, who is a values-led leader and can bring strong strategic oversight, excellent governance, and the ability to shape financial and digital systems fit for the future.

The opportunity

This is a broad and influential senior finance role, with real scope to shape how the organisation operates and grows its impact to best support the Croydon community.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you'll work closely with the CEO and Board, providing clear financial leadership, insight and challenge ensuring that the charity is financially resilient, operationally effective, and positioned to deliver on its mission.

You'll be empowered to:

· Lead financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting and statutory reporting

· Ensure compliance with charity finance regulations and best practice (Charity Code + SORP)

· Strengthen financial systems, controls and ways of working improving efficiency and effectiveness

· Steward assets, reserves and endowments to ensure long-term sustainability and responsible innovation

· Lead financial risk management and support confident organisational decision-making

· Support and develop colleagues through strong and collaborative line management

· Drive positive organisational change with clarity and credibility

· This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys working at both strategic and operational levels and who can bring people with them as the organisation evolves.

About you

We're looking for a Head of Finance who can bring integrity to everything they do, and who remains calm under pressure with the ability to prioritise confidently in a fast moving, complex, evolving environment. You'll be comfortable providing constructive challenge and have the credibility to influence at a senior level, while also bringing a modern, strategic mindset - financially astute, digitally capable and focused on continuous improvement. Above all, you'll be approachable and down-to-earth, with plenty of common sense and a good sense of humour.

Essential criteria:

· A degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or related fields or demonstrable extensive experience and a chartered accounting or financial qualification (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA)

· Understanding of charity finance regulations and the UK Charity Code, SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice)

· Experience in developing and implementing financial strategies and systems, with a focus on operational improvement and effectiveness

· Experience in stewarding financial assets, reserves and endowments for long-term sustainability and innovative impact

· Demonstrated knowledge and experience of financial management systems and risk management

· Excellent organisation skills, with experience in project management, and a proven ability to plan, organise, and lead the implementation of organisation-wide plans and processes

· A commitment to embracing and embedding the values of CA throughout the organisation
